Creating an Inclusive Dental Practice During Pride

June 7, 2023

From our partners at the Seattle LGBTQ+ Center, here are some practical actions and tips to help you foster a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ patients every day of the year.

Show Visual Clues

  • Display rainbow or trans flags or other LGBTQ+ symbols in your front office
  • Wear pronoun pins or other LGBTQ+ accessories
  • Include LGBTQ+ images and messaging in your marketing materials, such as brochures and social media posts

Use Appropriate Pronouns

  • Ask patients to provide:
    • their pronouns when they fill out their forms or during the intake process
    • if they have a preferred name they would like to go by
  • Ensure your staff is trained to use proper pronouns and gender-neutral language (like “you all” instead of “you guys”)

Create Safe Space

  • Train your staff to handle LGBTQ+ issues sensitively and with compassion
  • Designate private areas where patients can discuss sensitive issues with their providers
  • Partner with LGBTQ+ organizations in your community to provide resources that support their overall health and wellbeing

Cultivate an Open Environment
An open environment means your practice welcomes all patients, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

  • Educate your staff about LGBTQ+ issues and terminology to promote understanding and acceptance
  • Host LGBTQ+ events or offer LGBTQ+ services, such as free oral cancer screenings or discounts on teeth whitening
  • Be vocal about supporting the LGBTQ+ community on your website and social media channels
  • Have gender-neutral restrooms available for staff and patients

Seattle's LGBTQ+ Center offers a variety of resources for businesses and organizations looking to become more LGBTQ+ inclusive. We can offer guidance on creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ customers and patients and provide information on LGBTQ+ resources in the community. As a valuable resource for promoting inclusivity, the Center can help businesses and organizations create a more welcoming and supportive environment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
