Delta Dental of Washington’s Youth Awareness Program partners with local schools and community programs to inspire young people across the state to explore careers in dental health through hands-on learning and workshops.
The dental industry nationwide is experiencing a shortage of dental professionals while critical job openings at dental practices remain open. This affects patients in Washington State who report waiting a long time for available appointments and difficulty finding convenient and continuing care.
As part of our mission to increase access to oral health to everyone in Washington, with no one left behind, we launched our Youth Awareness Program to inspire the next generation of diverse dental professionals.
The program focuses on training young people of color and those in communities historically underrepresented in the dental profession.
“Youth from historically underserved backgrounds are less likely to see themselves in the dental field given the lack of diverse representation. Providing a hands-on experience where kids can place fillings, apply sealants, ask questions, and gain knowledge about the field will open their eyes to the possibility of becoming a dental professional.”
