Those who exercised consistently had healthier gums and fresher breath, compared to those didn’t exercise.

If you’re looking to shape up but dread the gym, try a workout replacement instead. Here are 5 outside-the-gym ways to get active:

1. Just dance!

If running on the treadmill sounds worse than running your nails on a chalkboard, bust a move. Whether you join a class or dance around your living room, dancing is a great way to burn calories. It doesn’t even feel like exercise.

2. Step-up and take the stairs.

Your daily activities contribute to the 30-minute minimum of physical activity we all need each day. So, why not make them count? Taking the stairs burns more calories than standing in an elevator.

3. Go for a walk.

That’s right. Walking at a moderate pace for 30 minutes a day is a great way to burn calories and kick-start your metabolism. It’s easy to squeeze into your schedule, too. Simply walk around the block in the morning, during your lunch hour or after dinner.

4. Kill 2 “chores” with 1 stone.

Many view a daily workout as a chore, but the more effort you put into cleaning, the more calories you burn. One easy strategy is to alternate your housework between levels.
