Navigating dental networks: Participating vs. non-participating dentists

March 26, 2024

We get it: whether your dentist is in-network or out-of-network is the kind of detail you may not consider until it’s too late and you’re already at the dentist. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, we're diving into the nitty-gritty of dental networks and why it's beneficial to choose a dentist that participates in your plan’s network.

So, what’s the deal with these networks anyway? When a dentist joins a network, they agree to certain terms and conditions, including negotiated rates for services. If a dentist is not in this network, your health benefits company can't work with them to keep costs as low as possible.

Now, let’s break down the key differences between seeing a participating dentist and a non-participating dentist:

Cost

Participating dentists: These dentists have negotiated rates with your insurance company, which typically means lower out-of-pocket costs for you. Delta Dental of Washington has three types of participating dentists - Preferred Provider Organization (PPO),Premier, and PPO Plus Premier. All types offer contracted rates, ensuring lower costs for members.

Non-participating dentists:While you can still visit these dentists, you might end up paying more since they haven’t agreed to negotiated rates and Delta Dental of Washington has no control over Non-Participating Dentist’s charges or billing practices.

Administrative Paperwork

Participating dentists: By seeing a participating dentist, you will experience a more streamlined administrative process, as the dentist will file your claims paperwork directly with your benefits provider, saving you time!

Non-participating dentists: You often will need to file claims paperwork yourself by coordinating with your benefits provider.

Remember: the details of what your dentist charges for certain procedures and which providers, exactly, are in your network are determined by the type of plan you have.
