Surviving Braces

February 25, 2015

Getting braces is exciting and overwhelming.  On one hand, you’ll soon have perfectly straight teeth.  On the other, you’ve got a mouth full of metal that needs special care.  But, don’t worry.  Caring for braces is super simple.

Here are our top 5 braces-survival tips:

#YOLO and you only get one smile.  So, keep it healthy.  Food and plaque can get trapped between your teeth and braces which causes cavities and stains.  Prevent problems by brushing for 2 minutes, twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Floss like a boss.  Your toothbrush doesn’t remove everything.  Floss with a threader (found at drug stores) to clean between your teeth and under wires at least once a day.

Choose chocolate when you’re craving something sweet.  Sticky treats and hard candies can damage your braces.  But chocolate is a soft, delicious option that dissolves quickly—making it the perfect choice.

Think before you chomp.  Biting into your food causes it to get stuck in your braces (so embarrassing) and may damage the wires and brackets.  So, use a fork and knife to eat foods like pizza, corn on the cob, and apples.

Celebrate and post that selfie!  You’re on your way to a straight, healthy smile.
