Get To Know Your Dental Plan

January 7, 2014

Everyone at some point has had a lousy day transformed by a brilliant infectious smile. A smile is to be flaunted, cherished … protected! Now imagine how a chipped, missing, rotting or yellowing tooth can ruin a smile - disastrous! To protect your smile you can start by better understanding your dental benefits and know how to best utilize your plan options.

Here are 3 basic ABSOLUTELY “MUST LOOK INTO” things to get the most out of your dental benefits.

Plan Basics

You’ll want to understand the basics of what your dental plan covers. All Delta Dental plans emphasize prevention of dental diseases. Brushing and flossing every day, and visiting your dentist regularly for checkups, can help you avoid expensive dental treatments and their costs. Many Delta Dental benefit plans pay all or most of the cost for routine dental checkups, including cleaning.

Dentist Network

If there is a dentist you prefer, make sure he or she is in network with your benefits carrier. Why is this important? If your dentist is in network, it will cost you less money out-of-pocket to go to the dentist and provide you with the greatest savings on procedures.

Annual Maximum Benefit

Most dental plans have an annual dollar maximum. This is the maximum dollar amount a dental benefit plan will pay toward the cost of dental care within a specific benefit period (usually January through December). The patient is personally responsible for paying for costs above the annual maximum. Consult your plan booklet for specific information about your plan’s annual maximum.

You’ll also want to check on the technology offerings for your dental plan. For Delta Dental of Washington subscribers, you can access all your account information on our website. After creating a log-in, you can view your plan options, check your plan benefits and eligibility, print and ID card and more.
