Washington Dental Service pioneered the concept of employer-sponsored dental coverage back in 1954, when the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU) decided to use part of its surplus fund to buy dental care for members’ children. It was a revolutionary idea. The innovative result of this idea was Washington Dental Service, established as a not-for-profit health service contractor dedicated to making dental care more widely available to everyone.
While the ILWU is still a Washington Dental Service customer, other purchasers of WDS plans today include The Boeing Company, Washington state employees, the Washington Education Association, REI, Alaska Airlines, Weyerhaeuser, as well as thousands of small and medium-sized businesses. Since dental coverage is our only business, no other company matches our service, our innovation or our community-wide efforts to prevent oral disease.
Headquartered in the Northgate area of Seattle, Washington Dental Service also has offices in Colville and Spokane, Washington. WDS currently employs more than 300 people.
